India’s Wind Power Capacity Set to Double to 107 GW by 2030: GWEC Report
Aug 27, 2025
India’s wind energy sector is on track for major growth, with installed capacity expected to more than double from 51 GW to 107 GW by 2030, according to the Global Wind Energy Council’s (GWEC) latest report, “Wind at the Core: Driving India’s Green Ambitions and International Influence.” Released in New Delhi, the report highlights that this expansion aligns with state-level Resource Adequacy Plans (RAPs), supporting India’s least-cost pathway to a successful energy transition.
Other studies by NREL, IEA, WRI, and Lawrence Berkeley suggest an even higher potential of 121–164 GW by 2030 if grid bottlenecks are addressed, RPO compliance is enforced, and auction designs are aligned with state requirements.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized that wind energy will play a central role in India’s target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030, with 100 GW coming from wind alone. He highlighted that wind is expected to contribute nearly 25% of the renewable mix, shaping India as a global clean energy leader.
Industry leaders including Girish Tanti (GWEC India/IWTMA) and Ben Backwell (GWEC CEO) underlined the economic and industrial opportunities. By 2030, wind could add 154,000 jobs, boost manufacturing, and meet 10% of global wind equipment demand, with India already the 3rd largest manufacturing hub. Harmonizing solar and wind policies can deliver affordable, round-the-clock clean power, accelerating India’s green transition.
