ISA and NTPC to Develop Over 1.5 GW of Solar Projects Across Africa
Apr 11, 2025
The International Solar Alliance (ISA), in collaboration with India’s NTPC, is set to sign tripartite agreements with seven African nations to develop over 1.5 GW of large-scale solar power projects. Key plans include an innovative 30 MW floating solar plant in Mauritius, alongside major ground-mounted projects: 800 MW in Guinea, 400 MW in Ethiopia, and 100 MW each in Malawi and Zambia. Smaller projects of 50 MW each are also planned in Mali and Niger.
NTPC will serve as the project management consultant, conducting feasibility studies across all participating countries. Discussions with Ethiopia and Guinea are already at an advanced stage. NTPC will also help design bidding processes to select solar project developers, while customizing business models to meet the unique needs of each country—for instance, Zambia has requested wider outreach strategies for better adoption.
ISA highlighted that many solar modules for African projects are currently imported from India, showing India’s strong presence in Africa’s solar landscape. However, China still dominates global solar equipment supply. To reduce dependency and mitigate supply chain risks, ISA is working on diversifying sourcing strategies.
This initiative strengthens South-South cooperation, boosts clean energy deployment in emerging economies, and underscores India's growing leadership in global solar development.
