Japan’s METI and Siemens Gamesa Partner to Build Offshore Wind Supply Chain
Jun 25, 2025
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is set to sign a strategic agreement with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to strengthen public-private cooperation in building a domestic supply chain for offshore wind power. The collaboration aims to fill the gap left by the absence of wind turbine manufacturers in Japan and to support the country’s push for renewable energy expansion.
As part of this initiative, Siemens Gamesa will also sign a memorandum of understanding with Japanese electronics giant TDK, which will supply permanent magnets for Siemens Gamesa's wind turbines. The agreements are scheduled to be formalized in Tokyo on June 25, 2025.
The partnership underscores Japan’s effort to localize its wind energy infrastructure by leveraging international expertise while developing domestic manufacturing capabilities. It also highlights Siemens Gamesa’s commitment to fostering global offshore wind markets through local partnerships. This move aligns with Japan's long-term decarbonization strategy and its goal of becoming a leader in clean energy technologies in the Asia-Pacific region.
