JSW Energy Commissions First 80 MW Unit of 240 MW Kutehr Hydro Plant in Himachal Pradesh

Aug 04, 2025

JSW Energy Ltd. has successfully commissioned the first 80 MW unit of its 240 MW (3x80 MW) Kutehr Hydroelectric Power Plant in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. Power dispatch to Haryana has commenced under a 35-year long-term power purchase agreement with Haryana Power Purchase Centre at a levelized ceiling tariff of Rs4.50/kWh. The second unit has already been synchronized with the grid and is undergoing trial runs, while the third unit is expected to follow soon.

This hydro project will cater to Haryana’s state DISCOMs — Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam — and aid in meeting the state’s Hydro Purchase Obligations. Sharad Mahendra, JSW Energy’s JMD and CEO, emphasized that Kutehr is among the fastest-built greenfield hydro projects in India, commissioned just in time to leverage peak monsoon water flow.

With this, JSW Energy's total hydro capacity rises to 1,471 MW. The company now has a total renewable capacity (including solar and wind) of 7,190 MW, raising the renewables share to 56%. JSW Energy’s overall portfolio includes 30.3 GW of locked-in generation capacity and 29.4 GWh of energy storage capacity — aiming for 30 GW generation and 40 GWh storage by FY 2030, aligned with its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
