LG Energy Solution and Toyota Tsusho Launch Battery Recycling JV in North Carolina

Jun 20, 2025

LG Energy Solution and Toyota Tsusho Corporation have formed a joint venture—Green Metals Battery Innovations, LLC—to build a battery recycling pre-processing plant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The facility, expected to be operational by 2026, will handle the dismantling and shredding of battery production scrap to extract black mass, which contains critical materials like nickel, cobalt, and lithium.

In its initial phase, the plant will process 13,500 tons of scrap annually—equivalent to over 40,000 EV batteries—primarily sourced from LG Energy Solution’s own EV battery manufacturing for Toyota Motor. The extracted black mass will then undergo post-processing to recover the raw materials.

The venture supports the development of a closed-loop battery recycling system, where recovered materials are reused in new battery production, promoting circularity in the battery supply chain.

LG Energy Solution aims to enhance its North American recycling capabilities through this initiative, while Toyota Tsusho emphasizes its contribution toward building a sustainable mobility society. The partnership marks a strategic effort to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen the domestic supply chain for key battery materials through advanced and scalable recycling solutions.
