MNRE Launches Rs2.3 Crore Innovation Challenge to Boost Rooftop Solar Adoption

Jun 23, 2025

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a Rs2.3 crore Startup Innovation Challenge to accelerate rooftop solar and distributed renewable energy (DRE) adoption across India. The initiative, supported by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and StartUp India (DPIIT), aims to identify innovative, cost-effective, and inclusive solutions for the rooftop solar and DRE ecosystem.

The challenge invites applications from startups working in sectors such as green technology, IoT, AI, blockchain, energy hardware, fintech, construction, and waste management. It will focus on four key areas: affordability, resilience, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

Applicants will compete for a total prize pool of Rs2.3 crore, which includes Rs1 crore for the first prize, Rs50 lakh for second, Rs30 lakh for third, and ten consolation prizes of Rs5 lakh each. Besides financial rewards, selected startups will receive incubation support, mentorship from domain experts and investors, and opportunities for pilot implementation, all facilitated by MNRE and NISE.

This initiative was launched during a national conference on skill development for the renewable energy workforce, reinforcing the government’s commitment to promote innovation and expand rooftop solar adoption in India.
