NHPC and RVUNL Sign MoU to Develop 2 GW of Pumped Storage Projects in Rajasthan
May 10, 2025
NHPC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL), the Government of Rajasthan's power generation utility, to jointly develop pumped storage and other renewable energy projects in the state. The partnership will be executed in a joint venture mode, starting with the development of two pumped storage projects of 1,000 MW each in the first phase, totaling 2 GW of planned capacity.
The MoU was formalized by Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), NHPC, and Devendra Shringi, CMD, RVUNL, in the presence of senior government and NHPC officials, including Smt Arti Dogra, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) and Chairman of Rajasthan Discoms. The signing signals a strong commitment by both the central and state governments to advance large-scale energy storage infrastructure, essential for managing the intermittency of renewable energy and improving grid stability.
This collaboration aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals and Rajasthan’s growing importance as a renewable energy hub. The pumped storage projects will serve as crucial assets in balancing power supply and demand, especially as more solar and wind capacity comes online in the region.
