NHPC Pushes for Early Implementation of West Seti and SR-6 Hydropower Projects in Nepal

Aug 04, 2025

Shri Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical) of NHPC, met with Shri Sushil Gyewali, CEO of Nepal's Investment Board (IBN), on August 2, 2025, in New Delhi to review the progress of NHPC’s key hydropower projects in Nepal — the 800 MW West Seti and 460 MW SR-6. During the meeting, Director Adhikari emphasized the urgent need to finalize the concessions for West Seti so that the Project Development Agreement (PDA) can be signed, paving the way for construction to begin by January 2026.

CEO Gyewali acknowledged the progress and agreed to grant the necessary technical sanctions. He also advised NHPC to optimize and reduce the project’s completion cost based on the Final Detailed Project Report (DPR). In a strategic financing suggestion, he proposed that a portion of the debt funding be sourced through a consortium of domestic banks in Nepal, which could offer more favorable interest rates than those currently projected in the DPR.

The meeting was also attended by NHPC’s Executive Directors of Strategic Business Development & Consultancy (SBD&C) and Head of Nepal Projects. The interaction underlined the growing Indo-Nepal cooperation in the hydropower sector and the commitment to accelerating clean energy infrastructure in the Himalayan region.
