NLC India, a government-owned lignite mining and power generation company, has commissioned the first phase of its 300 MW solar power project at Barsingar in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The initial capacity of 52.83 MW has been declared commercially operational after receiving certification from the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation.
The project was tendered in 2022, and Tata Power Solar Systems, a subsidiary of Tata Power, was awarded the EPC contract. Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate over 750 million units of green energy annually under the Central Public Sector Undertaking Program.
NLC has set ambitious renewable energy targets, aiming to add 8,279 MW of solar and 400 MW of wind capacity by 2030. Currently, it operates 1,380 MW of solar projects in Tamil Nadu and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, alongside a 51 MW wind project in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.
To strengthen its clean energy expansion, NLC recently approved an investment of ?16.3 billion in its subsidiary, NLC India Renewables (NIRL). NIRL has also partnered with MAHAPREIT to jointly develop 5,000 MW of renewable projects in Maharashtra, covering solar, wind, hybrids, floating solar, and storage solutions, with 500 MW planned in the first phase.
