NTPC Enters Nuclear Power with 2,800 MW Project in Rajasthan
Sept 19, 2025
NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power generator, is set to enter the nuclear power sector with a 2,800 MW project in Banswara, Rajasthan, in partnership with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL). Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone soon, marking NTPC’s official debut in nuclear energy. The project will consist of four Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), each with a capacity of 700 MW.
The first reactor is scheduled for commissioning in 2031, with subsequent units coming online at six-month intervals. Most of the project’s equipment and material will be procured from Indian contractors through competitive bidding, boosting domestic manufacturing. Senior government leaders, including the Rajasthan Chief Minister, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Chairman, and directors from BARC and NPCIL, are expected to attend the ceremony.
NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh recently announced the company’s ambitious plan to aggressively scale up nuclear capacity, targeting 30 GW by 2047. NTPC intends to pursue projects both independently and through its joint venture with NPCIL. Discussions are already underway with major domestic and international players such as Tata Consulting Engineers, L&T, EDF, Rosatom, and Holtec.
India currently operates 8,800 MW of nuclear power capacity and aims to expand this to 200 GW by 2047. The Banswara project represents a key step in achieving this long-term goal, diversifying India’s energy mix, and supporting clean, reliable baseload power generation.
