NTPC Green Energy Floats EPC Tender for 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS at Kayamkulam, Kerala

May 06, 2025

NTPC Green Energy has issued a major EPC tender for a 250 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project at its Kayamkulam site in Kerala, marking a significant step in India's grid-scale storage deployment. The BESS will be split into two 125 MW/500 MWh blocks, to be integrated with existing 33 kV and 220 kV switchgear infrastructure, respectively. The submission deadline and bid opening are both scheduled for June 24, 2025.

The scope includes complete turnkey development, encompassing design, construction, testing, commissioning, and 15 years of O&M. Each BESS container must have at least 5 MWh DC capacity and comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. The systems are expected to operate daily on a single-cycle basis for a minimum 15-year design life.

The project also mandates grid compliance studies, reactive power compensation, and power quality assurance up to the 400 kV/220 kV interconnection point. Key infrastructure includes battery racks, EMS, SCADA, PCSs, transformers, auxiliary systems, and a control room with supporting facilities.

This tender comes on the heels of NTPC Green's recent bid call for land and transmission infrastructure for 900 MW ISTS-connected solar projects in Bhuj, Gujarat, reflecting its aggressive push toward integrated renewable and storage solutions.
