NTPC to Enter Nuclear Power with 2,800 MW Project in Rajasthan
Aug 25, 2025
State-owned NTPC is set to mark its entry into nuclear energy next month with the foundation stone of a 2,800 MW nuclear power project at Banswara, Rajasthan. The project will include four Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) of 700 MW each and will be developed through Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASVINI), a joint venture with NPCIL in which NTPC holds a 49% stake.
The first unit of the Banswara project is targeted for commissioning by 2031, with the full plant expected by 2036. NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh announced at the BloombergNEF Summit that the company plans to add 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, adopting an aggressive approach towards nuclear expansion.
Beyond the Rajasthan project, NTPC is also exploring standalone nuclear projects and collaborations with global technology providers including Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), L&T, EDF, Rosatom, and Holtec. Singh highlighted that 6,600 MW of nuclear capacity is already under construction and another 7,000 MW is in development stages. Together, these projects are expected to take India’s nuclear capacity closer to 20 GW by 2030.
Currently, India’s nuclear power generation stands at 8,800 MW. NPCIL is targeting 50–55 GW by 2047, while the national goal is to reach 200 GW of nuclear capacity by the same year. NTPC’s aggressive entry into this space signals a major shift in India’s clean energy roadmap, complementing solar, wind, and other renewables with a stable, low-carbon baseload source.
