ORLEN Secures PLN 1.7 Billion for Green Hydrogen Projects under National Recovery Plan
Jun 21, 2025
Poland’s ORLEN Group has secured PLN 1.7 billion (approx. $430 million) in non-repayable funding through the country’s National Recovery Plan to support its flagship hydrogen initiatives—Green H2 and Hydrogen Eagle. The funding will be used to build electrolysis-based renewable hydrogen production infrastructure powered by clean energy, as well as low-emission hydrogen from municipal waste.
Green H2, led by LOTOS Green H2 (a special-purpose vehicle of ORLEN), will support the production of renewable hydrogen at the Gda?sk refinery, including a 100 MW electrolyser paired with an energy storage system. Hydrogen Eagle, a capital-intensive programme, will focus on diversified hydrogen generation from both renewables and municipal waste, reinforcing hydrogen supply networks across Poland and Europe.
ORLEN aims to develop 0.9 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2035, with 0.7 GW in Poland. The remainder will come via imports, depending on maritime infrastructure availability. The company’s recent investment in Hystar, a PEM electrolyser firm, further boosts its technological readiness for large-scale hydrogen rollout.
The funding falls under Measure B2.1.1 of the National Recovery Plan administered by Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, aimed at accelerating hydrogen infrastructure, storage, and transportation to drive economic growth and decarbonization.
