OTPC and Assam Power Corporation to Jointly Develop 250 MW Battery Energy Storage System
May 12, 2025
ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd (OTPC), a subsidiary of ONGC, has partnered with Assam Power Development Corporation Ltd to jointly develop a 250 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Assam. The system will store solar energy generated during the day for distribution during peak demand periods or nighttime, when solar generation is unavailable.
The initiative aims to ensure grid reliability and energy availability during high-demand hours, marking a strategic move toward integrating renewable energy with advanced storage infrastructure. The project will be executed in phases, considering the relatively new nature of BESS technology for many power sector entities in India.
The storage system will be linked to power substations, enabling efficient energy dispatch when generation dips. This joint venture underlines the increasing role of battery storage in India’s energy transition, supporting both decarbonization and grid resilience.
The project represents a growing trend of state and central utilities collaborating to deploy energy storage alongside renewable generation. As India scales up its solar capacity, such storage systems will be vital for managing intermittency and ensuring round-the-clock clean power.
