PEDA Collaborates with IISc to Launch Pilot Green Hydrogen Project Using Paddy Straw
Oct 10, 2025
The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to develop a pilot green hydrogen project that will produce hydrogen from paddy straw, marking a major step toward clean energy innovation and sustainable waste utilization in Punjab.
The MoU was signed by Neelima, Chief Executive Officer of PEDA, and the Registrar of IISc, and officially exchanged between Neelima and Prof. S. Dasappa from IISc’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER). The signing took place in the presence of Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy & Power, during the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Bio-Energy Research at the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) in Kapurthala.
Speaking about the initiative, Punjab’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Aman Arora, said the partnership reflects the state’s strong commitment to advancing clean energy technologies and promoting a circular economy. By converting agricultural residues into green hydrogen, the project aims to empower farmers, improve air quality, and supply industries with carbon-free fuel, contributing to Punjab’s long-term energy independence.
Arora added that the pilot facility will serve as a demonstration model for the technical and commercial feasibility of generating green hydrogen from agricultural waste. In addition to tackling stubble burning, the initiative is expected to create new revenue opportunities for farmers, generate employment in the green energy sector, and support India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
This collaboration is seen as a strategic milestone in Punjab’s renewable energy roadmap, positioning the state as a key player in India’s clean hydrogen ecosystem.
