Petroleum Minister Highlights India’s Green Hydrogen Milestones and Ambitious Targets

Oct 13, 2025

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently declared that India’s green hydrogen era has officially begun, outlining the country’s ambitious roadmap to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, which would account for roughly 10% of the global market. The minister also projected that the cost of green hydrogen could fall to below Dollar 3 per kilogram, down from the current $3.5 per kilogram, enhancing its competitiveness in the energy market.

Official estimates suggest that if green hydrogen reaches a price of Dollar 2.5 per kilogram, India could potentially offset Dollar 150 billion in energy imports. Puri elaborated that the government is initially planning 1 million tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen capacity, starting with 42,000 TPA through early tenders and later scaling up to 170,000 TPA. During the pilot phase, 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles are expected to be deployed, supported by nine refueling stations, while 19 companies have been allocated nearly 9 TPA of production capacity.

As part of India’s broader green hydrogen strategy, NTPC is developing the first green hydrogen hub at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The project represents a massive investment of around Rs1.85 trillion and will integrate 20 GW of renewable energy capacity to produce 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen along with 7,500 TPD of its derivatives.

This initiative is part of India’s push to reduce carbon emissions, achieve energy self-reliance, and accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies. With the establishment of production hubs, pilot deployment of hydrogen vehicles, and strong government support, India aims to emerge as a major player in the global green hydrogen economy in the coming decade.
