Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a series of green mobility initiatives in Hansalpur, Gujarat, marking a key step in India’s electric vehicle roadmap. As part of the initiative, he flagged off Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara, the company’s first indigenously manufactured battery electric vehicle (EV). The vehicle will not only serve the domestic market but also be exported to 100 countries, boosting India’s position as a global EV hub.

Alongside this milestone, the Prime Minister announced the commencement of hybrid battery electrode manufacturing in India. Under the leadership of TDSG, three Japanese companies will collaborate to manufacture battery cells locally, with production of battery cell electrodes also to be undertaken within the country. This move is expected to strengthen India’s EV supply chain and reduce dependence on imports.

The announcement comes after Maruti Suzuki’s June 2024 investment of Rs4.50 billion aimed at scaling up its renewable energy adoption over the next three years, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable operations.

These initiatives underline India’s push toward clean mobility, local manufacturing, and self-reliance in EV components, contributing to both domestic adoption and export-led growth in the EV sector.
