POWERGRID Acquires Davanagere Power Transmission for Renewable Integration
Sept 27, 2025
Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has acquired Davanagere Power Transmission Ltd. (DPTL), a special purpose vehicle formed by REC Power Development and Consultancy (RECPDCL), to implement a renewable energy transmission project in Karnataka. The acquisition, valued at Rs65.3 million, includes 100% equity shares and all associated assets and liabilities. POWERGRID was chosen as the successful bidder through a tariff-based competitive bidding process.
The project will be developed under a build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) model and focuses on augmentation works at the Davanagere substation, which is under construction. This system will strengthen interstate transmission and enable large-scale integration of renewable energy from the Davanagere and Chitradurga regions.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has identified a 4 GW renewable energy potential in these regions, with transmission for 2 GW already underway. Approximately 1,850 MW connectivity has been approved for the Davanagere pooling station. Final regulatory clearances are pending from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), including a transmission license and tariff adoption.
This acquisition adds to POWERGRID’s recent wins. The company secured projects from PFC Consulting to expand interstate transmission capacity by 4.5 GW in Madhya Pradesh and from RECPDCL to develop systems for evacuating 3.7 GW from pumped storage projects in Uttar Pradesh. These projects reaffirm POWERGRID’s leadership in building critical transmission infrastructure to support India’s clean energy transition.
