POWERGRID and PEC Partner to Establish ?17.19 Cr Centre of Excellence for Power & Energy Research

Jun 09, 2025

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (POWERGRID) has signed an MoU with Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, to establish the POWERGRID Centre of Excellence (COE), a state-of-the-art facility aimed at advancing education and research in Power and Energy Engineering. With an investment of INR 17.19 crore under POWERGRID’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the center will bolster PEC's academic infrastructure and provide hands-on training opportunities in cutting-edge energy technologies.

The COE will feature advanced laboratories and simulation setups in areas such as numerical relays, phasor measurement units (PMUs), inverters, cyber security, e-mobility, and controller systems. This initiative will enhance PEC’s Electrical Engineering curriculum and support postgraduate and doctoral research, promoting innovation aligned with national energy goals.

Prof. Rajesh Kumar Bhatia, Director of PEC, expressed gratitude for the partnership, highlighting its long-term benefits for students and researchers. POWERGRID CMD R.K. Tyagi underscored the importance of synchronized national grid operations and framed the initiative as a contribution to India's mission of "One Grid, One Nation, One Frequency."

Chandigarh Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma (IAS) praised the collaboration, noting the COE’s potential to act as a catalyst for India’s goals of Viksit Bharat, energy security, and net-zero emissions. The centre is expected to emerge as a beacon of advanced research, bridging academia and industry while nurturing future leaders in the power sector.
