POWERGRID Invites Bids for 5 MW/20 MWh BESS at Ujjain Solar Project
May 20, 2025
Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has issued a tender for a 5 MW/20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to be co-located with its 85 MW solar project at Nagda in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The deadline for bid submission and opening is June 16, 2025. Bidders must pay a Rs25,000 tender fee and fulfill several technical and performance criteria.
The scope includes design, manufacturing, transport, insurance, erection, testing, and commissioning of the BESS along with associated civil works. The BESS must feature a battery management system, bidirectional inverter (PCS), DC-DC coupler converters, energy management system, fire protection, HVAC, and illumination systems. The system is required to support one daily charge-discharge cycle for four hours, with a minimum annual availability of 95% and over 86%-AC efficiency.
The storage system will be integrated into the grid through the existing inverter duty transformer (IDT) and use solar energy for charging. Efficiency shortfalls beyond the guaranteed level will incur penalties of Rs20 per kWh of excess energy loss. Bidders must have prior experience in supplying at least 10 MWh of stationary grid storage using the same technology in the past three years.
This BESS project forms part of POWERGRID’s broader clean energy initiatives. Recently, the company awarded Smart Roof Solar Solutions and Gourav EnerGen India contracts for installing 3 MW of rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana across its buildings in western India.
