POWERGRID Signs MoU with Nepal Electricity Authority for High-Capacity Transmission Projects

Apr 23, 2025

POWERGRID has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the formation of two joint-venture companies aimed at implementing significant cross-border transmission systems between India and Nepal. The MoU, signed in the presence of Shri Manohar Lal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of India, and Shri Dipak Khadka, Hon’ble Minister of Energy, Water Resources & Irrigation, Government of Nepal, focuses on the development of two key transmission projects: the 400 kV Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) and the 400 kV Dododhara (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) double-circuit transmission systems.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi, Director (Personnel), POWERGRID, and Shri Kamal Acharya, Director of Grid Operation, NEA, marking a critical step in strengthening India-Nepal energy cooperation. These high-capacity transmission lines are designed to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the power supply between the two nations, supporting the broader goal of regional energy integration and sustainable energy development.

The partnership will not only improve grid connectivity but also facilitate the exchange of renewable energy, contributing to the clean energy objectives of both countries.
