POWERGRID Wins Bid for 3.7 GW Pumped Storage Transmission Project in Uttar Pradesh
Sept 08, 2025
Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has secured REC Power Development and Consultancy’s (RECPDCL) tender to develop an interstate transmission system (ISTS) for evacuating 3.7 GW of power from pumped storage projects (PSPs) in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh. The project will be executed under the build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) model and is expected to be completed in 30 months.
The tender, floated in April 2025, attracted bids from Adani Energy Solutions, Tata Power, Apraava Energy, Resonia, KCC Buildcon, HG Infra, and Enerica Infra 1, all of which cleared the technical stage. RECPDCL received connectivity applications from Greenko and Avaada for their PSP projects in the region.
The project scope includes the development of a 765/400 kV Robertsganj pooling station, loop-in loop-out (LILO) of existing 765 kV Varanasi-Gaya lines, a new 765 kV double-circuit line to Prayagraj, installation of reactors, and provision for future expansion. A 1×1,500 MVA interconnecting transformer at Robertsganj must be operational by December 2030.
POWERGRID will handle financing, clearances, and project management, while adhering to Make in India procurement rules. This win adds to POWERGRID’s recent successes, including ISTS projects in Karnataka and Rajasthan for large-scale renewable energy evacuation.
