Rajasthan Faces Severe Solar and Wind Curtailment Due to Transmission Delays
Sept 08, 2025
Since March 2025, Rajasthan has faced massive renewable energy curtailment, with nearly 4 GW of solar and wind power cut back. Curtailment, which began at 8.5% in March, surged to 51.5% during peak solar hours by August, as transmission delays and lower power demand from extended monsoons strained the grid.
Although solar and wind projects enjoy ‘must-run’ status, developers report losses of ?2.3–2.5 billion in FY26 so far. The main issue lies in delays of up to two years in critical transmission lines like the 765 kV Khetri–Narela and Bhadla II–Sikar II corridors. With Rajasthan’s GNA capacity at 14,000 MW versus 22,500 MW approved, congestion is inevitable.
Curtailments now extend beyond Rajasthan, affecting Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu (10–30%). Developers warn that if issues persist, revenue losses of 20–25% could risk insolvency.
Industry experts highlight Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as a key solution to absorb excess generation and extend transmission utilization. However, regulatory challenges and high costs remain barriers.
Developers and the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) have urged the government to fast-track transmission projects, impose penalties for delays, and create a compensation mechanism for affected generators.
