Reliance Power Partners with Bhutan’s DHI for 500 MW Solar Project, Boosting Regional Clean Energy Integration
May 19, 2025
Reliance Power Limited has signed a commercial term sheet with Green Digital Private Limited (GDL), owned by Druk Holding and Investments Limited (DHI), the Royal Government of Bhutan’s investment arm, to jointly develop Bhutan’s largest solar power project. The 500 MW solar project will be executed through a 50:50 joint venture under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, involving a capital investment of up to Rs2,000 crore. This project marks the largest private sector foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bhutan’s solar energy sector to date.
The initiative is a key milestone in enhancing regional clean energy integration and cross-border infrastructure collaboration across South Asia, aligning with Bhutan’s sustainability goals and the broader regional energy transition. Reliance Power has begun the EPC tender process based on international competitive bidding and is engaging leading financial institutions to secure long-term, sustainable project financing.
This landmark investment underscores Reliance Group’s strategic push to expand its renewable energy portfolio, particularly in solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Reliance Power currently holds a clean energy pipeline of 2.5 GWp solar capacity and over 2.5 GWhr of BESS capacity, making it India’s largest player in the integrated Solar + BESS sector.
The project, to be implemented over the next 24 months in phases, will significantly diversify Bhutan’s renewable energy mix beyond hydropower, enhancing grid stability and reinforcing India-Bhutan economic cooperation.
