Repsol Approves 100 MW Green Hydrogen Project in Spain
Oct 06, 2025
Repsol has approved the construction of its first large-scale 100 MW electrolyser at its Cartagena industrial complex in eastern Spain, marking a major milestone in its strategy to replace conventional hydrogen with renewable hydrogen. The facility will produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, which will be used as a feedstock to manufacture low-carbon products.
Recognized as a Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) by the European Commission and the Government of Spain, it will receive €155 million in funding through Spain’s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). With a total investment exceeding €300 million, the project will create around 900 jobs across various phases and reduce CO? emissions by 167,000 tons annually, equivalent to two-thirds of Spain’s electric vehicle fleet in 2024.
Developed in collaboration with Enagás Renovable, which holds a 25% stake, the plant is expected to be operational by 2029. It will play a key role in the Hydrogen Valley of Murcia, potentially connecting future hydrogen output to Spain’s Hydrogen Backbone and natural gas grid.
Repsol currently produces 360,000 tons of hydrogen annually, accounting for 60% of Spain’s hydrogen output and 4% of Europe’s consumption.
