SECI and KSEBL Sign Agreement for 125 MW / 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage Project in Kerala

Apr 11, 2025

In a significant step toward strengthening India’s energy storage capacity, a Battery Energy Storage Sale Agreement (BESSA) was executed between Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEBL) on April 10, 2025. The agreement paves the way for the development of a 125 MW / 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Kerala, aimed at enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration in the state.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Shri K Krishnankutty, Honourable Minister for Electricity, highlighting the government's active support for advanced energy solutions. This project will enable Kerala to store surplus renewable energy—particularly solar and wind—and dispatch it during peak demand periods, improving both reliability and efficiency of the power system.

The BESS initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to build flexible and resilient power infrastructure, crucial for achieving its clean energy and net-zero targets. With SECI spearheading large-scale renewable energy projects and KSEBL’s regional expertise, the collaboration sets a strong precedent for future public-sector-led energy storage ventures across India.
