SJVN’s Buxar Thermal Power Project to Boost Bihar’s Energy Security
Aug 26, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the first 660 MW unit of SJVN’s 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Gaya, Bihar. The event saw the presence of Bihar’s Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Union Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and senior officials from the Ministry of Power and SJVN.
The project, located at Chausa in Buxar district, is being developed by SJVN Thermal, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN. It is based on supercritical technology, which makes power generation more efficient and environmentally friendly compared to older plants. With a total investment of ?13,756 crore, the project will produce about 9,829 million units of electricity every year.
A major highlight is that 85% of the generated electricity will go to Bihar under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This will significantly reduce the state’s power shortages, especially during peak demand hours, and strengthen overall energy security in the eastern region.
The construction of the project has also contributed to domestic industries by using over 2.5 lakh MT of steel and 2.8 lakh tonnes of cement, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Once fully operational, it will become a crucial pillar in Bihar’s development journey.
