Spain Reaches 100% Renewable Energy for Electricity Demand on a Weekday
Apr 29, 2025
On April 16, 2025, Spain made history by meeting 100% of its mainland electricity demand with renewable energy (RE) sources for the first time on a weekday. Wind energy led the way, generating 256 GWh (45.8% of the day's electricity), followed by solar PV (151 GWh, 27%) and hydroelectric power (129 GWh, 23.1%). Solar thermal and renewable waste added minor contributions, while wind and solar PV combined at 11:15 a.m. to surpass electricity demand, producing 100.63% of the total.
In the days that followed, Spain broke another record on April 21, when solar power generated 20,120 MW of instantaneous power, covering 78.6% of demand. This milestone reflects Spain's rapid growth in renewable capacity, including 5.59 GW of new photovoltaic systems installed in 2023, bringing the total to 25.54 GW.
Spain's renewable energy share exceeded 50% of total electricity production in 2023, with a 15.1% annual increase in RE generation. As of late 2023, Spain ranks fourth globally for utility-scale solar capacity, with over 20 GW installed. Spain’s achievement demonstrates the feasibility of running a national grid entirely on renewable energy, even on weekdays, setting a strong example for other nations to follow.
