Strengthening US Solar Supply Chain for Clean Energy Growth
Aug 18, 2025
The BlueGreen Alliance, in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), has released a new supply chain analysis and mapping tool to identify gaps in the US solar manufacturing ecosystem. The initiative highlights the urgent need to strengthen domestic production of critical solar components to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean energy access.
According to Alisa Petersen, Federal Policy Manager at RMI, building a strong domestic supply chain will not only make solar energy more dependable but also create more good-paying jobs across communities. She emphasized that this resource will help policymakers and industry stakeholders understand where investments are needed to expand US solar manufacturing.
Echoing this concern, Ted Fertik, Vice President of US Manufacturing and Industrial Policy at BlueGreen Alliance, stressed that American workers cannot afford setbacks in the solar sector. He warned that the US risks losing the chance to lead in clean technology manufacturing and job creation if action is not taken soon.
Currently, the US has zero capacity to produce polysilicon ingots and wafers and only minimal capacity for solar cells. Other vital components like flat glass and power optimisers also face shortages, with domestic supply meeting less than 25% of the country’s solar installation demand.
