Tata Power Applies for Distribution Licence Expansion in Maharashtra

Jun 28, 2025

Tata Power has submitted an application to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) seeking a distribution licence to expand its electricity supply operations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and several other parts of the state. The company aims to serve new areas currently dominated by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), potentially offering consumers more affordable tariff options.

The application covers key regions such as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Jalna Taluka, Badnapur, Waluj MIDC, parts of Mumbai like Mulund, Bhandup, and Kanjur-Powai, and extended areas including Navi Mumbai (NMMC), Panvel (PMC), and Thane. Tata Power is also targeting Pune district areas including Pune City, Haveli, Maval, Mulshi, and Khed Talukas, along with the entire corridor from PMC to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA).

Currently, MSEDCL holds dominance in the proposed expansion zones. If approved, Tata Power’s entry could foster competition in Maharashtra’s power distribution sector, potentially benefiting consumers through improved service and competitive tariffs. The move aligns with Tata Power’s broader strategy to grow its transmission and distribution footprint across India, where it already serves 12.5 million customers.
