Torrent Power to Invest Rs22,000 Crore in 1,600 MW Thermal Power Project in Madhya Pradesh

Sept 01, 2025

Torrent Power Limited has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) to develop a 1,600 MW (2x800 MW) Ultra-Supercritical coal-based power plant in Madhya Pradesh. The project, to be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model, will supply its entire capacity to MP Discoms under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) at a tariff of Rs5.829/kWh. The Rs22,000 crore investment marks the largest-ever power sector investment by Torrent Group.

Coal for the project will be arranged by MPPMCL under the SHAKTI Policy of the Ministry of Coal. Expected to be commissioned within 72 months, the project will deploy Ultra-Supercritical technology, ensuring higher efficiency and lower emissions compared to conventional coal plants. It is projected to generate 8,000–10,000 jobs during construction and 1,500 jobs during operations.

According to Vice Chairman and MD Jinal Mehta, the plant will contribute to India’s goal of 80 GW additional coal-based capacity by 2032 to support economic growth and grid stability. With this addition, Torrent Power’s portfolio will expand to 9.6 GWp of locked-in generation and 3 GW of pumped storage capacity.
