TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Join Forces for Green Hydrogen Production

Feb 21, 2025

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture for the development of a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery. This facility will produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, primarily serving Zeeland’s platform. Scheduled for commissioning in 2029, the project aims to cut CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons per year. The total investment is around €600 million, with both partners seeking financial support from European and national subsidy programs, as well as additional project funding.

Key Highlights of the Partnership
  • Zeeland Electrolyzer (250 MW, Operational by 2029)
    • Produces 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually
    • Reduces 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year
    • €600 million investment with subsidy applications
  • ELYgator Electrolyzer (200 MW, Operational by 2027)
    • Located in Maasvlakte, Netherlands
    • TotalEnergies to use 130 MW to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen per year for its Antwerp platform
    • Expected to reduce 150,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year
    • Powered by renewable electricity from the OranjeWind offshore wind project

These initiatives reinforce TotalEnergies' and Air Liquide’s commitment to accelerating industrial decarbonization. By integrating offshore wind energy with hydrogen production, the projects mark a significant step toward sustainable fuel alternatives in the refining and chemical sectors.

This collaboration strengthens Europe’s green hydrogen infrastructure, supporting the continent’s energy transition goals and promoting industrial-scale hydrogen adoption.
