TruAlt Bioenergy and Sumitomo Corporation have signed a landmark bioenergy agreement during the Japan-India Next-Generation Economic Forum, attended by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shigeru Ishiba. The collaboration aims to align India’s push for energy sovereignty and biofuel leadership with Japan’s expertise in advanced decarbonisation technologies under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM).

The partnership will start with the construction of four Compressed BioGas (CBG) plants in Karnataka and Maharashtra, creating nearly 700 direct and indirect jobs and up to 1,000 additional livelihoods. Future expansions will focus on ethanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), sectors crucial for India’s clean energy transition and global net-zero goals. A Joint Venture Company will be formed, with TruAlt Bioenergy holding 51% and Sumitomo 49%.

Through the JCM, Japan’s low-carbon technologies will be deployed in India’s bioenergy sector, ensuring transparent crediting of GHG reductions and measurable climate outcomes. The initiative is positioned to enhance farmer incomes, rural industrialisation, and India’s energy self-reliance, while contributing to both nations’ Paris Agreement and NDC targets.

TruAlt Bioenergy’s founder Vijay Nirani emphasized that biofuels are central to India’s Panchamrit commitments, highlighting the partnership as a step towards making India a global biofuel hub and advancing Japan’s decarbonisation contributions.
