Trump Administration Ends $7 Billion ‘Solar for All’ Grant Program

Aug 11, 2025

On August 8, 2025, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the termination of a $7 billion solar energy grant program launched under President Joe Biden. The program, called “Solar for All”, aimed to expand access to solar power for low-income communities, serving nearly 1 million households across most U.S. states.

The grants, awarded in 2024 to 60 nonprofit organizations, tribes, and state governments, were designed to reduce electricity costs and emissions while promoting clean energy adoption. However, the Trump administration—which took office in January 2025—has been rolling back federal support for solar and wind energy, calling them expensive and unreliable.

Funding for the program was eliminated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump last month. Zeldin stated that the EPA no longer has the authority or appropriated funds to continue the program, labeling it a “boondoggle.”

The cancellation, which had been widely expected, marks a significant shift in U.S. federal energy policy—moving away from renewable energy subsidies and toward other priorities. This decision could slow solar adoption in underserved areas and potentially increase reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation in those communities.
