Uttar Pradesh Leads with Highest Number of Installed Bio-CNG Projects in India
Apr 12, 2025
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has sanctioned a total of 94 Bio-CNG/Compressed BioGas (CBG) projects across India, with Uttar Pradesh emerging as the top-performing state. Out of these, 17 projects from Uttar Pradesh have been sanctioned Central Financial Assistance (CFA) amounting to Rs. 90.89 crore. Notably, 7 of these projects have already become operational, following successful inspection and disbursal of CFA.
The state currently has 31 installed Bio-CNG/CBG projects, with a cumulative capacity of 241.82 tonnes per day (TPD)—the highest in the country. This performance underscores Uttar Pradesh’s proactive role in India’s bioenergy expansion and highlights the state’s commitment to sustainable waste-to-energy solutions.
These bio-CNG projects are integral to India’s broader clean energy transition and support the goals of energy self-reliance, waste management, and rural income generation. As the government continues to promote decentralized bioenergy systems, the successful implementation and scaling of such projects in Uttar Pradesh could serve as a model for other states to replicate.
