Waaree Energies Shifts 6 GW Solar Manufacturing Facility from Odisha to Gujarat and Maharashtra

Jun 23, 2025

Waaree Energies has announced a significant change in its earlier plan to set up a 6 GW integrated solar ingot-wafers, cell, and module manufacturing facility in Odisha. In a board meeting held on June 20, 2025, the company approved the relocation of the project to expedite implementation and better utilize the proceeds from its September 2024 IPO.

According to the revised plan, a 3 GW module plant will now be built in Samakhiali, Gujarat, while another 3 GW module plant will be located in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, or another yet-to-be-finalized site. A 6 GW solar cell facility will be established at Unn, Gujarat, and a 6 GW ingot and wafer plant at Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Waaree cited execution delays at the original Odisha site as the reason for the shift. The move is a setback to Odisha’s ambitions of becoming a solar manufacturing hub. The state had earlier approved solar manufacturing proposals from Grew Energy, Jakson Engineers, and others totaling ?14,489.78 crore. In April 2025, Inox Solar was allotted land in Dhenkanal for a 4.8 GW cell and module plant with a Rs4,000 crore investment, highlighting Odisha’s commitment to the sector despite Waaree’s withdrawal.
