WEF & BCG White Paper Highlights Technology’s Role in Climate Adaptation
Apr 19, 2025
The World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group, has released a pivotal white paper titled “Climate Adaptation: Unlocking Value Chains with the Power of Technology.” This report underlines the urgent need for climate adaptation, with 2024 recorded as the hottest year to date. It emphasizes that the impacts of climate change extend across entire value chains, necessitating coordinated, technology-driven responses from businesses and governments.
The paper showcases how advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, Earth observation, and drones are instrumental in anticipating and mitigating climate risks. It outlines opportunities in three critical value chains: agriculture, energy, and manufacturing, where tech-enabled solutions—like precision farming, early warning systems, and predictive maintenance—can enhance resilience, efficiency, and sustainability.
However, the report also identifies barriers, including a lack of standardized metrics, insufficient data access, and difficulties in quantifying the ROI of adaptation efforts. To overcome these, the report calls on global leaders to establish collaborative platforms, aligned standards, and shared data systems to scale solutions effectively.
With benefit-to-cost ratios of up to 43:1 in some sectors, the economic case for climate adaptation through technology is compelling, making this white paper a strategic guide for future-focused climate resilience efforts.
