Rising Data Centre Demand Prompts Rethink of India’s Power Planning Strategy

India’s power planning framework is being reassessed as a rapid expansion of data centres in select states is expected to significantly alter electricity demand patterns. Concerns over concentrated consumption and its potential impact on grid stability have prompted fresh evaluations by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
The CEA is expected to advise states and power distribution companies to incorporate projected electricity demand from data centres into their resource adequacy plans. This step aims to ensure sufficient generation, transmission, and storage capacity to meet future consumption without compromising grid reliability.
With India positioning itself as a major hub for data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure, electricity demand from this segment is set to rise sharply. The government is targeting investments worth $200 billion in data centres and AI by 2030, with installed capacity projected to grow substantially over the coming years. Electricity consumption from data centres is also expected to increase significantly by the end of the decade.
Major states such as Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are emerging as key destinations for data centre development. Global and domestic companies, including leading technology firms and industrial groups, have already committed significant investments in this space.
Resource adequacy planning plays a critical role in assessing the mix and scale of energy resources required to meet demand at the lowest possible cost. These plans typically consider conventional and renewable generation capacity, storage systems, reserve margins, and transmission infrastructure over a rolling 10-year horizon.
The anticipated growth in data centre capacity is likely to reshape demand profiles in host states, creating new challenges for load management and grid balancing. Policymakers are therefore focusing on integrating these projections into planning processes to ensure a stable and resilient power system.
Overall, the surge in data centre development is expected to become a key factor influencing India’s electricity demand outlook, requiring coordinated planning across states and utilities to maintain efficiency and reliability in the national grid.
