India Adds Record 6.05 GW Wind Capacity in FY26, Total Installed Base Crosses 56 GW
Apr 07, 2026
India has achieved a record-breaking milestone in its renewable energy journey, adding 6.05 GW of wind power capacity during FY 2025–26, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This marks the highest annual addition in the country’s history, surpassing the previous peak recorded in FY 2016–17.
The latest addition represents a significant year-on-year growth of nearly 46% compared to FY 2024–25, highlighting a sharp acceleration in the deployment of onshore wind projects. With this, India’s total installed wind energy capacity has now crossed the 56 GW mark, reinforcing its position among the leading global wind energy markets.
The growth has been driven by a combination of policy support, improved execution capabilities, and a robust project pipeline. Key states such as Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have played a major role in this expansion, supported by increasing adoption of wind-solar hybrid projects and the gradual implementation of green energy open access frameworks.
The government’s continued focus on the sector has also contributed to this progress. Measures such as concessional customs duties on wind turbine components, waiver of inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges until June 2028, competitive bidding mechanisms, and dedicated renewable consumption obligations have strengthened investor confidence. Technical backing from the National Institute of Wind Energy has further supported sectoral growth.
This record capacity addition significantly boosts India’s renewable energy portfolio and aligns with the country’s broader objective of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030.
