Indian Railways Eyes 3 GW Renewable Energy Push, Targets Rs1 Trillion Savings by 2030

Feb 17, 2026

In one of India’s largest green energy initiatives, Indian Railways plans to invite bids for 3 GW of renewable energy projects worth Rs 1.18 lakh crore in the next fiscal year. The move is part of the railways’ ambitious strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 while significantly cutting fuel costs.

According to government officials, the carbon reduction plan could help the national transporter save approximately Rs 1 trillion in energy costs by 2030.

Project Scope and Implementation

  • Bids will be floated for projects valued at around Rs 18,000 crore each, to be installed on:
    • Railway-owned land
    • Rooftops of 8,000 railway stations
    • Along rail tracks
  • The projects will be managed by Railway Energy Management Co. Ltd. (REMCL), a joint venture between Indian Railways and RITES Ltd, as part of a larger goal to procure 20 GW of green power by 2030.

Strategic Benefits

  • Renewable energy will complement the railways’ track electrification drive, with 69,427 route kilometers already electrified, covering 99.2% of the network.
  • Indian Railways, which holds nearly 5 lakh hectares of land, is among the country’s largest electricity consumers, with projected consumption expected to rise from 21 billion units currently to 72 billion units by FY30.

The initiative positions Indian Railways as a leader in sustainable transport energy, leveraging its vast land and infrastructure assets to accelerate renewable adoption and cut long-term energy costs.
