Vikram Solar has announced plans to invest Rs 15,037 crore in setting up a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing facility at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. The investment was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Government of Tamil Nadu, marking one of the state's most significant investments in advanced energy storage manufacturing.

The proposed facility is expected to create approximately 2,670 direct employment opportunities and will further strengthen Tamil Nadu's position as a leading destination for clean energy manufacturing. The MoU was signed during an event hosted by the state's Department of Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce in the presence of Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay, highlighting the government's continued focus on attracting large-scale investments in renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

The new manufacturing unit will focus on producing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which have become a critical component of modern power infrastructure. BESS technologies enable utilities and renewable energy developers to store excess electricity generated from solar and wind projects, improve grid reliability, support peak demand management, reduce renewable energy curtailment, and provide ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support. As India accelerates the deployment of renewable energy, large-scale battery storage is expected to play a vital role in ensuring a stable and flexible electricity grid.

The investment also expands Vikram Solar's growing manufacturing presence in Tamil Nadu. The company already operates solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing facilities at Oragadam and Vallam, while its integrated manufacturing complex at Gangaikondan produces both solar cells and PV modules. The addition of a dedicated BESS manufacturing facility reflects Vikram Solar's strategy of diversifying beyond solar module production into integrated clean energy solutions.

India's demand for battery energy storage has been rising rapidly, driven by ambitious renewable energy capacity targets, increasing solar and wind penetration, and government initiatives promoting standalone and co-located energy storage projects. Central and state agencies have been issuing large-scale tenders for BESS installations to support round-the-clock renewable power supply and strengthen grid resilience. By establishing domestic manufacturing capabilities, Vikram Solar's proposed facility is expected to contribute to reducing import dependence, strengthening the local supply chain, and supporting the country's long-term energy transition and clean manufacturing objectives.
