Waaree Renewable Technologies Expands into New Zealand with Utility-Scale Solar and Battery Storage Project

Waaree Renewable Technologies Limited (WRTL), the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) arm of Waaree Energies, has marked its entry into the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) renewable energy market by signing an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Agreement for the development of a utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New Zealand. The project represents a significant milestone in the company's international growth strategy and is expected to become one of the country's largest solar and energy storage developments upon completion.

The agreement has been signed with a special purpose vehicle (SPV) of an Independent Power Producer (IPP) and will be executed in partnership with two experienced New Zealand-based companies. Under the consortium arrangement, Waaree Renewable Technologies will lead the solar engineering and supply scope while leveraging the local expertise of its partners for project execution. The current ECI phase will focus on early-stage engineering, technical planning and project optimisation, after which the project owner may award the full Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to the consortium.

The proposed project combines large-scale solar generation with battery energy storage, a configuration that is increasingly being adopted worldwide to improve grid stability and maximise renewable energy utilisation. The BESS will enable excess solar energy generated during daylight hours to be stored and supplied during evening peak demand or periods of lower renewable generation, helping enhance grid reliability, improve energy resilience and reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based electricity.

The expansion into New Zealand aligns with Waaree Renewable Technologies' broader strategy of building an international EPC portfolio beyond India. By collaborating with established local partners, the company aims to combine its expertise in large-scale solar engineering, procurement and project execution with regional market knowledge, ensuring efficient delivery while meeting local regulatory and technical requirements.

New Zealand has set an ambitious goal of achieving 100 percent renewable electricity generation by 2035, subject to normal hydrological conditions, with solar energy expected to play an increasingly important role alongside the country's dominant hydroelectric and geothermal resources. As electricity demand rises due to the electrification of transport and industry, investments in utility-scale solar projects integrated with battery storage are gaining momentum to improve energy security and reduce seasonal supply variability.

The broader Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) region has emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing renewable energy markets, supported by strong government decarbonisation policies, rising private investment and increasing deployment of energy storage technologies. Large-scale battery storage systems are becoming essential for integrating higher shares of renewable energy into the electricity grid, supporting frequency regulation, reducing curtailment and ensuring reliable power supply during periods of fluctuating renewable generation.

Waaree Renewable Technologies has been steadily expanding its presence across India's renewable energy sector through utility-scale solar EPC projects, commercial and industrial installations and energy transition solutions. Its entry into the ANZ market reflects the growing international ambitions of Indian renewable energy companies, which are increasingly exporting their engineering capabilities to global clean energy markets.

As countries accelerate investments in renewable energy infrastructure to meet climate commitments and strengthen energy security, projects combining solar photovoltaic generation with battery energy storage are expected to become a cornerstone of future power systems.
