Uttar Pradesh Prepares 34,000 MW Power Strategy to Meet Summer Demand Surge
Apr 20, 2026
The state government has rolled out a comprehensive plan to handle rising electricity demand during peak summer months, focusing on thermal capacity, long-term agreements, and power market purchases to ensure uninterrupted supply.
The government of Uttar Pradesh, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has finalized preparations to maintain consistent electricity supply during the intense summer season. The state’s energy department has devised a strategy to ensure the availability of nearly 34,000 MW of power, keeping projected peak demand in mind.
According to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, the plan includes bringing all newly developed thermal power units into operation. Around 80% of the expected peak demand will be met through pre-signed long-term agreements (MoUs), while the remaining requirement will be fulfilled ??????? power exchanges.
Pankaj Kumar, Managing Director of UPPCL, noted that electricity demand typically rises between April and September, with June expected to witness peak demand of approximately 33,375 MW—one of the highest levels recorded. Demand in May and July is projected to remain between 31,000 MW and 32,000 MW. To manage this surge, the state has activated all available sources of generation and supply.
Major thermal projects such as Ghatampur, Khurja, Panki, Obra, and Jawaharpur are now operational, significantly boosting generation capacity. Additionally, the third unit of the Ghatampur plant is expected to be commissioned by April 30, further strengthening supply.
To ensure grid stability, about 80% of electricity needs during peak hours will be met through long-term tie-ups, while the remaining demand will be sourced via power trading platforms like Indian Energy Exchange, Power Exchange India Limited, and Hindustan Power Exchange. This approach will help maintain a balance between demand and supply, minimizing the risk of outages.
The state has also arranged a power banking mechanism of around 4,663 million units (MU) with other states. This system allows Uttar Pradesh to draw electricity during periods of high demand and return it later, enhancing overall supply flexibility.
The Chief Minister has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted power across both urban and rural areas, emphasizing strict monitoring and accountability. Regular review meetings are being conducted to oversee implementation.
Alongside supply-side measures, efforts are underway to strengthen the transmission and distribution network to reduce technical faults. Feeder-level monitoring has been intensified, and initiatives such as loss-reduction drives, smart metering, and digital monitoring systems are being rapidly deployed to improve efficiency and reliability.
