Adani, NTPC, JSW Cut Solar Generation as Rajasthan Grid Faces Evacuation Bottlenecks
Dec 07, 2025
Top solar producers in Rajasthan, including Adani Group, NTPC Green, Serentica (backed by KKR), Zelestra (backed by EQT), and JSW Group, have reduced output after grid congestion forced regulatory intervention. According to people familiar with the situation, these developers curtailed nearly 5GW of peak-hour solar generation in the second half of November, resulting in potential revenue losses and exposing the widening gap between rising solar capacity and slow transmission upgrades.
On 14 November, the Northern Region Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC) restricted the evacuation of power from multiple solar plants in Rajasthan, citing grid security concerns. The regulator noted that of the 23GW connected to five major pooling stations, only 18.35GW could be evacuated due to “evacuation constraints.” Rajasthan, which has over 40GW of renewable capacity and the highest solar irradiation in India, remains highly vulnerable to such bottlenecks. Queries to the NRLDC and the companies involved went unanswered.
Industry executives said congestion is becoming widespread, with some pooling stations facing curtailment as high as 50–55% during peak solar hours. Experts attribute the problem to the rapid expansion of solar installations outpacing the development of supporting transmission networks. “Rajasthan’s challenge today is that of evacuation. Capacity is built, plants are operational, but transmission is not keeping up,” said Rahul Mishra, senior vice-president and head of commercial and industrial business at BluPine Energy.
