ArcelorMittal to Invest Nearly $ 900 Million in 1 GW Renewable Energy Expansion in India
Dec 23, 2025
Global steel major ArcelorMittal has announced plans to invest around $900 million to develop three renewable energy projects in India with a combined capacity of 1 GW, as part of its strategy to secure clean power for its domestic steelmaking operations.
Once commissioned, the new projects will double ArcelorMittal’s renewable energy capacity in India to 2 GW and expand its global renewable portfolio to 3.3 GW, the company said in a statement.
The investment plan includes a 36 MW solar power plant in Amravati, Maharashtra, which is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2027. The remaining two projects are large-scale hybrid renewable installations targeted for completion by the first half of 2028.
One of the hybrid projects involves a 400 MW solar facility integrated with 500 MWh of battery energy storage in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The other project, located in Bachau, Gujarat, will combine 250 MW of wind capacity, 300 MW of solar capacity, and 300 MWh of battery storage, creating a fully integrated renewable energy complex.
ArcelorMittal said the electricity generated from these projects will be supplied to AMNS India, its 60:40 joint venture with Nippon Steel. AMNS India operates a major steelmaking facility at Hazira, Gujarat, which is currently undergoing expansion to increase capacity to 15 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
The company noted that the renewable energy investments are designed to support the expansion of its Indian operations while significantly reducing carbon emissions. Collectively, the projects are expected to deliver annual carbon dioxide savings of around 4 million tonnes and meet approximately 35% of the electricity requirements of AMNS India’s Hazira operations by 2028.
Commenting on the announcement, Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, said the projects reflect the company’s commitment to sustainable growth and the global energy transition. He added that the investments aim to provide a reliable supply of clean energy while strengthening ArcelorMittal’s renewable footprint worldwide.
Separately, AMNS India is also developing its own 550 MW renewable energy project in Bachau, Gujarat, comprising 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind capacity. This project is expected to generate annual carbon dioxide savings of approximately 0.9 million tonnes, complementing ArcelorMittal’s broader renewable strategy in the region.
Beyond India, ArcelorMittal is advancing renewable energy projects in Brazil and Argentina through joint ventures. When fully operational, the company’s planned clean energy capacity across India and these two countries is expected to reach 3.3 GW.
