BHEL Secures INR 13,500 Crore NTPC Contract for Telangana Thermal Power Project

Apr 02, 2026

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a Government of India undertaking, has received a major contract from NTPC Limited for the Telangana Stage-II supercritical thermal power project. The Notification of Award (NOA) was issued on March 29, 2026, marking a significant development in India’s thermal power infrastructure.

The project involves the main plant package for a 3x800 MW facility located in Peddapalli district, Telangana. BHEL had originally emerged as the successful bidder for this project in October 2024, followed by a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) in November 2024 to begin preliminary engineering work.

Under the scope of the contract, BHEL will handle the complete lifecycle of the project’s main plant package. This includes design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, commissioning, and testing of key components such as boilers, turbines, and generators, along with associated civil and structural works. The contract was awarded through an international competitive bidding process, although the awarding entity, NTPC Limited, is a domestic organization.

The total value of the order exceeds Rs 13,500 crore, excluding GST, making it one of the substantial project wins for BHEL in recent times. The company is expected to complete the project within 62 months from the date of the award.

Both BHEL and NTPC are Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), and the company has clarified that the contract does not fall under related party transactions.
