Cairn Oil & Gas Taps Renewable Power from Serentica to Run Rajasthan Oil Operations
Apr 06, 2026
Cairn Oil & Gas, a part of the Vedanta Group, has started sourcing renewable energy from Serentica Renewables India to support its oil field activities in Barmer, Rajasthan. The collaboration marks a shift toward integrating clean energy into conventional oil and gas operations.
As part of the agreement, Cairn will procure 25 MW of captive renewable hybrid power, meeting around 20 percent of the energy needs of its Barmer asset—India’s largest onshore oil-producing field. The companies have entered into a Power Delivery Agreement aimed at ensuring a stable and continuous supply of green energy for operations.
The renewable power will be generated through a combination of solar and wind sources at Serentica’s Gadag facility in Karnataka. This transition is expected to significantly lower Cairn’s carbon footprint, with estimated annual emission reductions of nearly 115 kilotonnes of CO? equivalent—comparable to planting millions of trees each year. It will also help the company meet its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) requirements.
Designed with a 70 percent capacity utilisation factor, the 25 MW project is projected to supply about 153 million units of clean electricity annually to Cairn’s Mangala processing facility. The initiative reflects a broader move toward improving operational efficiency while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
This partnership highlights Cairn’s long-term sustainability strategy, aligning its business operations with cleaner energy practices. It also forms part of the company’s larger goal of increasing renewable energy adoption and progressing toward its net-zero carbon ambitions in the coming years.
