Carbon Masters, BBMP and Saatarem Join Hands to Set Up Bengaluru’s First Waste-to-Value Park
Dec 03, 2025
Carbon Masters India has entered into a partnership with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Saatarem Alternative Fuel and Energy (SAAFE) to establish Bengaluru’s first integrated waste-to-value park at the Kannahalli municipal waste facility. The initiative aims to dramatically cut the city’s landfill dependence and convert organic waste into clean fuel and high-quality fertiliser.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar laid the foundation stone for the project at the Kannahalli Waste Processing Plant in Bengaluru West. The BBMP-owned plant currently handles around 350 tonnes per day (TPD) of segregated waste for composting, with a total installed capacity of 1,000 TPD.
Under a public–private partnership framework, BBMP and concessionaire SAAFE are collaborating with Carbon Masters India and additional technology partners to turn the site into a first-of-its-kind circular economy waste-to-value hub.
Once fully built, the park will be capable of processing roughly 900 TPD of organic waste, generating 30 TPD of Carbonlites biomethane (CBG) and 750 TPD of organic fertiliser.
In its initial phase, a biomethane plant will treat 300 TPD of organic waste, producing 10 TPD of biomethane and 250 TPD of organic fertiliser.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Deputy CM Shivakumar stated that Bengaluru’s rapid growth has intensified its waste management challenges. “This project shows that waste can be transformed into a valuable resource,” he noted, emphasising that converting municipal waste into fuel, power and fertiliser will ease pressure on landfills, reduce pollution and create green employment opportunities.
SAAFE spokesperson Abhishek Gowda said the partnership will help scale the company’s efforts from pure composting to a comprehensive waste-to-value model, benefiting the city and local communities.
Carbon Masters Co-Founder Som Narayan added that integrating biomethane, fertiliser production, power generation and RDF on one site will make Kannahalli India’s first circular waste-to-value park, offering a replicable model for other urban centres.
Two additional technology partners have joined the consortium to complete the integrated setup.
• Professor Dasappa from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will lead efforts to convert residual waste into 1 MW of renewable power for onsite use and grid export, and explore gasification pathways to produce green hydrogen from municipal solid waste.
• Shekar Prabhakar, CEO of Hasiru Dala Innovations, will develop a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to process 100 TPD of dry waste, recover recyclables and produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF).
The Kannahalli project aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, by encouraging waste segregation, resource recovery and scientific disposal. It is expected to significantly reduce landfill-bound waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions and provide farmers with nutrient-rich organic fertiliser to improve soil health.
