Centre Clears INR 797 Crore Green Hydrogen Jetty with 4 MTPA Capacity at Paradip Port
Feb 27, 2026
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has granted approval for the construction of a dedicated green hydrogen and ammonia handling jetty at Paradip Port. The project, estimated at Rs 797.17 crore, will be undertaken by Paradip Port Authority under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.
Designed with a capacity to handle 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the proposed facility aims to position Paradip as a key hub for green energy cargo. The infrastructure will include a specialised jetty, storage tanks, pipelines, cargo handling systems, and related support facilities to manage green hydrogen, ammonia, and other liquid cargo.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal stated that the approval reflects the government’s push to create future-ready, sustainable port infrastructure under the leadership of Narendra Modi. He noted that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of transforming Indian ports into engines of green growth and clean energy logistics.
Technically, the jetty will feature a centre-to-centre distance of 279 metres between extreme end dolphins and a dredged depth of 14.3 metres at the berth to facilitate safe handling of liquid cargo vessels. Paradip Port Authority will extend capital support of 20 percent of the project cost—approximately Rs 159.43 crore—during the construction phase. The facility is targeted for completion within 24 months.
Beyond boosting cargo capacity, the project is expected to strengthen export logistics, attract investment, generate employment, and support the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in eastern India. Provision has also been made to handle other liquid cargo to ensure optimal utilisation during the initial growth phase of the green hydrogen sector and diversify the port’s cargo mix.
