Essar Energy Transition Hydrogen Signs EPC Contract with ENKA for Low-Carbon Hydrogen Plant
Jan 17, 2025
Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen has finalized an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with ENKA for its flagship low-carbon hydrogen production plant, HPP1, at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. With a production capacity of 350 MW, the facility will capture approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 annually—equivalent to removing 250,000 cars from the roads.
The UK Government has identified HPP1 as a critical part of its low-carbon hydrogen strategy. In October 2024, funding was approved to support the project, which will be the first large-scale low-carbon hydrogen initiative within the HyNet Cluster. HPP1 is a major milestone in EET Hydrogen's vision to establish 4 GW of low-carbon hydrogen production across the North West of England, helping industrial businesses decarbonize their operations, safeguarding jobs, and stimulating economic growth.
Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with ENKA: “Following a highly competitive tender process, we are excited to announce this critical contract. ENKA has an excellent track record, with over 580 contracts in 57 countries, and we are confident in their ability to deliver a complex project like HPP1. This partnership is a significant step toward our ambition of becoming the UK’s premier producer of low-carbon hydrogen.”
Hakan Kozan, Member of ENKA's Executive Committee, highlighted the transformative nature of the project: “We are thrilled to partner with EET Hydrogen on this groundbreaking initiative. The HPP1 project will play a pivotal role in advancing the UK’s low-carbon hydrogen industry while contributing to global decarbonization goals. We bring extensive expertise and a commitment to excellence, and we look forward to delivering a safe and successful project.”
ENKA, a global engineering and construction firm headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, specializes in engineering, construction, power generation, real estate, and trade. In the UK, the company has previously worked on major projects, including the Hinkley Point Power Plant in Somerset and the Shotton Mill Paper Mill Factory in Flintshire.
The HPP1 plant, as part of the HyNet Cluster, represents a key development in the UK’s efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy, reduce emissions, and foster sustainable growth in the energy sector.
